Remark: Max Fischer was Austrian citizen until 1918; then, after the downfall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he became Czechoslovakian citizen. In 1932 he was naturalised in Prussia.
He was expelled from the SA because his application to become member of the Nazi-Party was declined on the grounds of his “unreliability” and “non-nationalsocialist behaviour”. This was in no small part due to Fischer's attempt to denounce his line manager, Prof. Vogt, at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Society to gain the latter's post. Not surprisingly, Fischer tried (successfully) to reframe his dismissal from the SA as “oppositional behaviour” after the war before the denazification committee. The committee had the files on his dismissal, and they clearly showed that his SA membership was annulled solely due to his failed application to the NSDAP; his service in the SA was regarded as “reliable”. Regardless of this, he was cleared and could continue to work for the university.
