Remark: Winterstein declared himself "Roman-Catholic", but since he had a Jewish father the Nazis regarded him as "half-Jew" and consequently removed him from his post at the University of Breslau. Winterstein emigrated to Turkey and became Turkish citizen in 1941. However, he returned to Germany in 1954 and lived in Munich until his death.
